Young minds get a taste of secondary school life through innovative outreach programme

Thanks to our innovative outreach programme, local primary school pupils are getting a taste of secondary school lessons.

Launched this term, we have expanded our primary outreach programme to include eight classroom-based two-and-a-half-hour sessions spread over the academic year.

The first two primary schools to take up the initiative were Year 5 classes from Milnthorpe and Yealand. They experienced a session making a video game and then bringing a character to life by creating a 3D version of it using our CAD and 3D printers.

In January, schools are invited to sign up to step into the shoes of a world leader and become a United Nations ambassador for the day. Year 5 pupils can also take a virtual trip to Spain, bringing Spanish to life through a language and crafts session.

In March, 9—and 10-year-olds can experience the creative side of maths with activities like origami and pattern-making. In June, Year 5s can join author and CBeebies star Joseph Elliott for an afternoon of storytelling. They can also try African drumming and printmaking.

Primary schools can also invite our head teacher Mr Henneberry to come to their school to teach a maths lesson.

Mr Surtees, who helped to organise the first sessions this month, said:

“Our local primary schools are our partners; this way, we can extend their fantastic work. They provide the next generation of Dallam students from 35 feeder schools across the South Lakes and Morecambe Bay area. This initiative offers Year 5 students an early taste of secondary school life designed to ease the transition and ignite their excitement for their educational journey. It was lovely to see how much they got from visiting us.”

We thank Mrs Oliver, Mr Mellor, and Mr Watson, who ran this first session.
