Year 10 BTEC Enterprise students meet local businesses
47 Year 10 BTEC Enterprise students have spent the day with local businesses.
For their BTEC coursework, this group of Year 10 students have been tasked with researching and writing about a small or medium sized business. This task includes writing about the:
- Aims and activities of the business
- Skills and characteristics of the people who run the business
- Type of market research carried out by the business
- Political, economic, social and technological factors which affect the business
- Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for the business
Who did Dallam students meet?
Mark Porter – Owner of Higginsons of Grange.
Phil Graham – Founder and Former Owner of Sensible Choice.
Jamie Hill – Operations Manager for Premier Recruitment Group.
James Short – Owner of Go Burrito, Lancaster.
Dallam students were split into groups and spent 30 minutes with three out of the four entrepreneurs. Students asked questions based on the areas they needed to research and made notes. Mark, Phil. Jamie and James were great at engaging with the students and asking them lots of questions about their future aspirations.
The top questions from our students:
How many pies do Higginsons sell each week? How do your businesses find out about what your customers want? How does technology affect your business? How do you use social media? What are the skills and characteristics needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
What’s the next step?
Students now have to choose one of the four businesses to further research online and then write five different assignments about that business. These assignments contribute 30% of their mark for the BTEC Enterprise qualification.
It’s great for students to meet real business people and to hear directly from them about their businesses. The students showed great engagement and what they heard has reinforced a lot of what they’ve learned about business in their first term of the course.
