Sixth Form Students Shine in the British Biology Olympiad

Sixth Form Students Shine in the British Biology Olympiad

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of our Sixth Form Biology students who recently took part in the prestigious British Biology Olympiad (BBO).

The British Biology Olympiad challenges and stimulates students with a passion for biology, pushing them beyond the curriculum to expand and extend their talents. Students are presented with unfamiliar topics and complex ideas, meaning success relies not simply on learned content, but on sharp problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of core biological principles.

This year, we entered 7 Year 12 students and 13 Year 13 students, who completed two demanding 45-minute online papers during the week commencing 19 January. Their papers were analysed and nationally ranked by UKBC, the organisation that runs the competition.

Outstanding results

Despite the bar being set even higher nationally this year, our students performed exceptionally well:

  • 1 Gold
  • 2 Bronze
  • 3 Highly Commended
  • 2 Commended

Nationally, only 5% of students achieve Gold, highlighting just how impressive this accomplishment is.

All participating students receive an e-certificate via school and are eligible for BioNet membership of the Royal Society of Biology – a fantastic recognition of their academic dedication.

A step towards the International Stage

The BBO is more than a competition, it is the first stage in selecting the UK team for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). The IBO brings together some of the most talented pre-university biology students in the world, with over sixty countries competing in rigorous theoretical and practical assessments.

We are especially delighted that Lilly Ni (Year 13), who achieved Gold, has progressed to Round 1 of the UK selection process. Lilly will sit a further one-hour test in school this Friday. If successful, she will move on to the next stage at the University of Warwick in April, with the potential to represent the UK at the IBO in Lithuania this July.

This is a remarkable achievement and an exciting opportunity – we are all cheering Lilly on!

Looking ahead

We are also extending this culture of academic challenge further down the school, with our Year 10 students set to take part in the Biology Challenge later this year.

Huge congratulations to every student who took part. Competing at this level requires courage, resilience and intellectual curiosity; qualities we are immensely proud to see in our Sixth Form.
