Learning in Nature: Forest School Adventures with Year 7 and 8

Every Monday, a group of 12 Year 7 and 8 students step away from the traditional classroom and into the woods. These students are part of Dallam School’s weekly Forest School programme, based in Silverdale, by The Stomping Ground. For the whole day, learning looks a little different. It’s hands-on, student-led, and rooted in the natural world.

Among the many activities on offer, whittling has become a clear favourite. Using tools to shape wood into creative designs such as lightsabers, wizard staffs, and bows and arrows, students develop fine and gross motor skills while also engaging in a calming, mindful practice. The rhythmic, repetitive motions of whittling have a soothing effect on the nervous system, helping students regulate their emotions and focus their minds.

Cooking on the campfire is also a firm favourite. Students have made pancakes, popcorn, brownies, and cheese toasties. Through building and lighting the fire, students learn that patience and perseverance are needed. This gives opportunities to talk to the students about how they can transfer these skills to other areas of life. Many of the students struggle with self-belief and self-esteem. Being able to achieve in small ways within the forest setting helps to repair the sense of self and increase confidence in themselves and others.

The natural environment plays a crucial role in both student learning and wellbeing. Exposure to nature has been linked to improved academic performance and reduced stress levels. It also promotes physical activity, social skills, and a greater connection with the world, ultimately fostering holistic development. Having the freedom of the forest is in stark contrast to the students normal experience at school. The forest setting allows for curiosity, creativity and experimentation. Students can explore their limits and test out new ways of working.

Forest School is intentionally child-led; students are given the autonomy to choose and shape their activities, supported by adults who help scaffold their experiences to ensure success and purpose.

This freedom, choice and connection to the natural world can be transformative. Many of the young people involved have shared how Forest School helps them feel calmer, more confident and better able to face the school week:

“I really enjoy forest school – I get to chill and it makes me feel happy. I enjoy being outside.”

“I feel better on forest school days – it’s easier to get into school. I enjoy looking and noticing the things in the woodland.”

“I like forest school – I get to build dens and stuff like that. I’m learning how to manage my energy better and how to work as a team.”

Through Forest School, Dallam is proud to offer an inclusive, enriching experience. It’s more than just a day in the woods; it’s a place where students learn to believe in themselves, connect with others, and discover a lifelong love of learning.
