Dallam School students shine at Lancaster University mathematics challenge
A team of Dallam School students did us proud this week as they took part in Florence Nightingale Day at Lancaster University – an inspiring celebration of female mathematicians and women working in STEM.
Our young mathematicians worked incredibly well together, showing real collaboration, determination and resilience (even sacrificing their lunch to keep solving problems!). Their hard work was rewarded with an impressive second-place finish in the Maths Quiz, beating schools from across the region, including teams travelling from as far away as Barnard Castle. We are absolutely delighted with their achievement.
Alongside the competition, students attended three thought-provoking lectures delivered by female academics from Lancaster University. Each lecturer shared their personal journey – from A levels through to undergraduate study, Masters degrees, PhDs and research appointments – highlighting the many pathways that mathematics can open.
Students learned about:
- Modelling infectious disease with the UK Health Security Agency during the pandemic
- International research collaborations and opportunities to travel the world
- Cutting-edge cybersecurity and AI work with GCHQ, where maths plays a crucial role
- How involvement in Maths Olympiad can reveal exciting and unexpected career paths
The day was hosted in Lancaster University’s impressive Management School lecture theatres, offering our students a first-hand taste of academic life and a glimpse into what studying mathematics at degree level might look like.
Events like these are invaluable in widening our students’ horizons, building confidence and helping them imagine themselves as the mathematicians, scientists and analysts of the future.
A huge well done to the whole team – you represented Dallam brilliantly! 👏
