Crafty Calculations: The Art of Maths

Crafty Calculations: The Art of Maths

Mathematics isn’t just about numbers—it’s an art form, too! That’s precisely what Storth and Silverdale primary school students discovered during our Crafty Calculations: The Art of Maths session at Dallam. During an afternoon of hands-on creativity, the students explored mathematical concepts in exciting and unexpected ways.

With 23 students from Storth and 22 from Silverdale, the session was filled with energy and enthusiasm. Each activity combined problem-solving with artistic expression.

Mathematical art in action

The students took part in four engaging activities:

  • Origami Creations – They started with simple models like a dog and a rabbit before moving on to designing a times table fortune teller, using folding techniques to reinforce multiplication skills.
  • Insect Symmetry – Carefully drawing insects, the students explored reflection and symmetry, honing their observation and artistic precision.
  • Rotational Symmetry – Using a pinwheel, they created mesmerising patterns while learning about angles, rotations, and design.
  • Drawing a Cardioid – A heart shape emerged as students connected points with straight lines, illustrating the beauty of mathematical patterns.

The student verdict

The response from students was overwhelmingly positive. They awarded us five stars for:

  • The warm welcome they received
  • Learning something new
  • Enjoyment of the session
  • The interesting and fun activities

“The origami was so fun because I did not know how to do origami and my Mum loved the bunny and dog.”

At Dallam, we believe that learning should be engaging, immersive, and enjoyable. Crafty Calculations: The Art of Maths was a perfect example of how maths can be brought to life.
