KS3 and KS4 careers

Throughout your time at Dallam, we will highlight different careers, the skills you will need, and the various routes to get where you want to go.

When you’re considering your future, we encourage you to focus on your interests, what motivates you, and your skills. We also encourage you to challenge gender stereotypes and not let them sway you from your career aspirations. Once upon a time, female police officers or male nurses would have been unheard of!

Whatever you decide to do, the choices you make now are very important. You will get lots of help and advice in school. Look out for events like our Options Information Evening, and talk to your teachers.

Year 9 options

One of the big decisions you will make in school is the subjects you study during Key Stage 4. Many of you will then go on to Sixth Form at Dallam, while others may choose college or start an apprenticeship.

Our Year 9 Options booklet includes loads of information about all of the subjects and the process of choosing them.

Working lunches and breakfasts

We invite professionals from the local community to speak with our students about their careers. They discuss their career paths, including the qualifications they’ve earned, and provide insights into their daily work and what they enjoy about their jobs. These sessions can be formal presentations or informal Q&A discussions. They happen bi-weekly and are open to students in Year 11.

Work experience

Work experience is a great way to build evidence for your CVs and future applications. You can do it in your own time, either after school or in the holidays. Experiences can be as short as a one-hour insight into an organisation through to a full week. You don’t have to limit your experience to Cumbria or Lancashire, there are opportunities and placements all over the country and virtual options.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a great way to earn and learn, with competitive wages and the opportunity to study as you go. Here is some useful information to find out more about how to become an apprentice.

Useful resources

The Start in Cumbria and Lancashire websites include helpful information about jobs and career opportunities and local education and training provisions.

Use BBC Bitesize to help with your homework, revision and learning for all school years. Find free videos, step-by-step guides, activities and quizzes.
